OVERVIEW
Mission:
The mission of the Academy is to instruct students in all aspects of
health-related careers, while maintaining a comprehensive high school
education. The Academy is designed to prepare students for their place
in an ever-changing world they will inherit - a world of health and
human service.
Overview of the Academy: The Academy began in the fall of 1998
and has a current enrollment of over 200 students, freshmen through
seniors, who have made a commitment to a challenging curriculum in the
areas of allied health, professional, and biotechnology professions. Our
goal as educators is to provide them with valuable experiences,
appropriate curriculum, and real-world applications that will help them
become successful members of society.
Learning Environment: The school learning environment is a
combination of classroom and laboratory experiences along with research
and field study opportunities that include clinical rotations,
mentoring, and certifications in Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT),
First Aid, CPR, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Veterinary Medical
Assistant. The curriculum is presented using an interdisciplinary,
thematic approach that incorporates such teaching aides as textbooks,
models, laboratories, and computer Internet access and computer software
programs.
Real-World Experiences: Students are exposed to real-world
settings through clinical rotations and internships, Career
Investigation Days, College Career Nights, speakers and field trips.
Students are placed in one-year clinical rotations and summer
internships that provide a real-world setting that compliments their
field of interest. Placements are available in selected departments of
hospitals, pharmacies, optometry, veterinary clinics, agricultural and
medical research facilities, and biomedical engineering firms.
The Academy has current or past partnerships with such renowned
facilities as Children's Medical Center, Denton County MHMR Center, Lake
Village Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Las Colinas Medical Center,
Parkland Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital of Plano, RHD Memorial Medical
Center, Trinity Medical Center, and University of Texas Southwestern
Medical Center at Dallas. The Academy has also received local attention
in the Dallas Morning News and Carrollton Leader newspapers.
Advisory Board: The Academy has a dedicated and qualified
advisory board whose mission is to "form a network of opportunities and
to provide input and direction to the Academy in order to provide our
students with appropriate curriculum, valuable experiences, and
real-world applications that will prepare them for the world-of-work."
